Resting garments

We recommend resting and rotating yours suits and garments, especially trousers, in-between wears promote longevity and prevent excessive and premature wear. Giving your suit a few days to hang and relax will also help restore its shape. An extra pair of pants with your suit is also handy solution for promoting longevity of the suit.

Closet rules and hanging

A storage bag will protect your suit from insects, fading, and dust. Moths are your enemies. Retain your suit in its bag whenever it is not in use.

To retain the shoulder shape of your jacket, always hang your jacket on a suiting hanger (and not on the back of a chair).

A good way to hang your trouser is the Savile Row Fold, perfected at London's finest tailoring houses. Start with the trouser upside down straddling the hanger. Fold one leg in through the hanger, dropping the bottom hem in-between until it sits just above the crotch. Folder the second trouser leg over the first and through the hanger. Shake the hanger, and marvel at how sturdy it is. Alternatively, half folding the trouser, matching the press line on the fronts (how we supply them to you), over the trouser rail of the hanger is still effective.

Dry cleaning and cleaning your garments

Do not clean your suit regularly or unnecessarily, as it will damage your suit. Minimal cleaning will lengthen your suits’ life and save money on cleaning expenses. Unstained suits can be cleaned once per season, and lightly pressed or steamed in-between wearings. It is up to you to show good judgment. With all the solvents, mechanical agitation and high drying temperatures, a good suit in the wrong hands can quickly end up a charity donation.  We are happy to recommend a good reputable dry cleaner.

In the event your suit becomes stained, ask your dry cleaner for a spot clean only. If you do decide to remedy the stain yourself, always blot, rather than rub. Rubbing damages fibres, removes dyes, and can spread or set the stain. We are happy to offer further advice on effective stain removal upon request.

We recommend:

       1. hanging your suit overnight in the cool, moist night air within its suit bag and undercover to refresh and rehydrate the cloth; and

       2. hanging your suit near the shower for a light steam - this will further save you trips to the dry cleaners.

Cleaning your shirting

Never dry-clean your shirts. Shirts may be commercially laundered. However, this process may be overly aggressive, involves more pressing and may increase wear and tear. We recommend machine washing in cold water at home or hand washing in cold water.

Our buttons are made from high quality mother-of-pearl and horn, which are both natural materials. Like most things, our buttons are not impervious to overly forceful pressure. In the unlikely event that your buttons do crack or break, please let us know, and we will arrange a new one for you.

If the Afternoon considers, in its sole discretion, that the garment is unfit for purpose, it will replace the garment with a garment of acceptable quality for purpose.

5. Natural wear and tear

The Afternoon is not responsible for wear and tear of a garment. To increase the longevity of your garment, please read our garment care advice above, and make note of your tailor’s advices and cautions. Wear and tear is unavoidable and part of every day life. Trouser wear in the fork is a common problem men face, especially for those who are prone to rubbing in the inner thigh area.

We recommend working with your tailor to make appropriate cloth choices suitable to your suit or garment’s requirements. Lightweight or luxurious cloths may have a greater likelihood to experience wear and tear. We employ lining in our trousers, including an added silk saddle. However, this will only minimise or delay the expected wear and tear of the garment. We employ construction techniques that minimise tear in the fork of the pants. However, in some instances wool suiting cloths may not hold up to excessive use.

We employ blind stitching in hem of the trouser base so that, if your foot becomes caught on the hem, the blind stitching breaks before the cloth is damaged. Please take care when putting your foot through the trouser base to avoid breaks in the blind stitching. We recommend putting your socks on first before putting your foot through the trouser.

6. Adjustments

Following your first fitting with the Afternoon, a second fitting will be organised once the garment is made. During this second fitting our tailors will determine, with you, whether any adjustments to the garment are required. All adjustments are completed at no extra cost. In the rare instance a garment cannot be adjusted, the Afternoon will organise for the client to be re-fitted and the garment will be remade at no extra cost to the client.
